St Peter’s Church is in an idyllic setting looking down over the River Bure. It has a Norman nave and chancel. The rood screen is from the late 15th century and the faces of the twelve saints have been scratched out. A commonwealth record attributes this to ‘a godly trooper’ from nearby Hautbois. Poet, writer and broadcaster John Betjeman recalls that seeing St Peter’s Church during a holiday on the Broads as a boy was the first time he ever fell in love. He maintained a love of churches throughout his life. Visitors can arrive at this church by boat, moor at the staithe by the churchyard and walk up the path.
