St Mary's Church is not far from Norwich but enjoys a peaceful rural setting. The texture of the flintwork is striking. Detective skills come in useful when trying to date the architecture of a church. Here, the tower was built in the second half of the 14th century but in the Decorated style of the first half. The nave and chancel date to the 13th century with lancet windows of that time. The east window is Perpendicular, dating to the late 14th/ early 15th century. An extensive restoration was carried out in the 19th century, to which the font and barrelled roof date. Two fine ledger stones are situated in the chancel with coats of arms of the Hernes and the Cookes. The ornate wall monument, complete with a coroneted swan and helmet, remembers John Herne (d.1661).
