The Minster is situated in the historic surroundings of the Saturday Market Place in the heart of King’s Lynn, offering a welcome to pilgrims and visitors for over 900 years. The Priory church was founded in 1101. A Greater church; mostly C13 with fine C14 woodwork and brasses. Fine C18 organ, C19 restorations; monumental reredos by Bodley.

Margery Kempe: Author, Pilgrim, Mystic

The medieval English mystic Margery Kempe led a fascinating life. She had intense visions, experiencing the agony of the Crucifixion and imagining herself as the wife of Christ. These visions brought on bouts of public weeping which many struggled to understand. Often suspected of being a heretic, Margery was threatened with burning at the stake but stood resolute. She undertook pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Germany and Jerusalem. Being illiterate, Margery relied on scribes to note down her experiences. That book disappeared until 1934 when it fell from a cupboard at a country house during a search for a spare ping pong ball.

Norfolk, Nelson’s County

Horatio Nelson was born in the small, windswept Norfolk village of Burnham Thorpe on 29th September 1758. The North Sea lies only one and a half miles away, its lapping and pounding providing the soundtrack to Horatio's first twelve years of life. The Nelson family moved into the rectory in Burnham Thorpe in 1755 (the original building is no longer there). Horatio's father, Edmund, served as rector of the Burnhams, the group of villages taking their name from the river Burn. Nelson's mother, Catherine, was distantly related to Britain's first Prime Minister, Robert Walpole, and Horatio was named after his godfather Horatio Walpole 1st Earl of Orford. They had eleven children, Horatio being the sixth, and eight of them survived infancy. Burnham Overy Harbour was the young Horatio's link to the wider world as it was from here that he was captivated by sights of ocean-going vessels and interacted with merchant seamen.
