St Mary’s, Watton by Matthew McDade
Church Road, Watton, Thetford, IP25 6DQ

St Mary's Church is unusual in that it is an urban church with a Norman round tower, having escaped alteration in the medieval period. It did not escape the Victorians, however, who added wide aisles. Inside, look up at the beautiful chancel ceiling with gilt stars. Notice the charming poorbox said to have been carved in the likeness of the Minister at the time, William Forster. William holds a bag in his left hand into which donations can be placed and across his chest reads 'Remember the poore 1639'. The Royal Arms of George II hang at the west end of the nave. The churchyard contains 5 Commonwealth War Graves from the First World War and 33 from the Second World War.
